The Granite Belt

Writer's picture: ElleElle

When you hear Granite Belt you likely think of Wine country... or maybe SNOW! But have you ever considered it for a family holiday? If not then I highly suggest you add it to your list! The list of things to do is endless and you could easily spend a week exploring the area and still want to come back for more. We visited the Granite Belt in Autumn. The plan was to catch all the beautiful leaves falling and experience a more chilly vibe then our usual Brisbane "winter" without visiting when it was too cold. We were only able to stay for 2 nights which was disappointing because once we arrived we realized just how much there was to do there with little kids. For accommodation we decided to stay at an air bnb so we could have our own space and not be worrying about bothering people if the baby got fussy. We would have taken the caravan but we had some maintenance to do on it and not enough time before we left. Last minute trips are kind of our thing. We stayed at Albion Cottage in Warwick. When I booked it, I thought it looked quite sweet but I mainly choose it due to having 4 bedrooms. What an amazing place to stay it turned out to be! Honestly do yourself a favor and stay here. The house is set out so wonderfully and you will be transported to another time. It reminded me of my grandparents home and triggered memories I didn't even know I had. The period décor was full of surprises and you never ran out of things to look at. The hosts have thought of everything to make their guests feel comfortable. There is heating in every room, extra blankets throughout, a fully stocked kitchen, washing machine, children's toys and books, video games, DVDs, separate tv rooms and more. When I travel I don't want to feel like I am just at home, but I do want to have all my comforts and this was the perfect example of that! I can't stop telling people how great it was. The location was also perfect, you could walk into town. We ordered Chinese food from Chung Hing and it was great. Everything you could need was nearby including Woolworths. On the first day we drove down to Stanthorpe and Applethorpe. We visited the Granite Belt Christmas Farm - Have a read of my blog post here This was a really great activity for the kids that didn't take too long.

Then we headed into Stanthorpe for a look around and were able to find some tree's still dropping their beautiful golden leaves! We had a play at a playground, walked around a bit checking out the murals painted along the walls and pretended to take a bite of the giant apple then headed to Suttons Juice factory where we bought some delicious juice and had a walk around the garden. There are some chickens up the back the kids had a chat to as well. After this we headed back to our cottage to cook dinner and go to bed. The next day we got up early to visit Girraween National Park. We stuck to the easy track but it was really great. Honestly it was something totally different to see prehistoric boulders that formed about 250 million years ago! I would classify it as one of my favorite national parks yet!

Something I noticed about the granite belt was just how lovely the people were. In every store and attraction we went to, we were treated with such kindness and our accommodation hosts were so lovely too. The kind of Queensland hospitality we moved to the Sunshine State for. After our hike we headed to the Granite Belt Maze for lots of fun and laughter. Then we had three very tired kids with smiles all over their faces. On the drive back we saw a giant dinosaur and old railway station which was a good novelty for the kids too. On our final day we headed into town to look for a souvenir then took a long scenic drive home. There was soo much more we wanted to do and see but we had such an amazing trip and can't wait to go back.
