A 90 minute drive inland from Brisbane, sitting 700m above sea level is the beautiful town of Toowoomba. It is known as the garden city and it is easy to see why! Such a gorgeous leafy place to visit and an excellent (long) day trip or short stay location for families. We decided to visit in Autumn due to the temperature and wanting to see the leaves changing hue and falling, however due to the heat we may have visited a little early for the real colour show. The drive into town is so beautiful and scenic, you really feel the altitude as you arrive. We spent most our day around the Picnic Point area. The Australian flag flying high signals your arrival, and we hopped out at a slightly busy playground area. It was quite easy to find a park and the toilets were close by, essential with little kids. The cafe/restaurant had a great menu and my avocado on sourdough with eggs was delicious. We ate down at the park across the road so the older kids could run around. There is plenty of shade and grassed areas for a picnic. Quite fitting the name of the spot. After we ate, we ventured down to the waterfall, which you can do quite easily from the carpark. There are several walking tracks but 3.7km with a "carry me" toddler was not something I wanted to brave today. Instead we headed to another playground (in walking distance) which was like something from a cool fairytale. Quirky climbing houses, rock climbing walls, slides and a flying fox, made for plenty of fun. We had a fantastic time and can't wait to go back and do some more exploring! Next visit we will stop in at the Cobb+Co Museum and bring a backpack to carry miss tired legs on a hike or mountain climb. Highly recommended for little kids. It is important that I mention that 24 degrees forecasted on google is not like the 24 degrees back in Brisbane... When we arrived it was windy and there was a definite chill in the air. It warmed up around lunchtime, but make sure you pack extra jackets and wear layers.
