Rainbow Beach

Just under 3 hours north of Brisbane city is the coastal, rural town of Rainbow Beach. Although this is usually a camp/stay overnight holiday spot, we did it as a day trip for the first visit. As soon as we arrived I felt a wonderful vibe! Even though it was school holidays, it was not crazy busy as you would expect somewhere like Byron bay, lending to the isolation of the location. We pulled into the carpark and were greeted with a fantastic playground for the kids. Surrounded by large shade heavy tree's with some shelter and seating scattered around, it was the perfect starting point for our day. The kids played on the pirate ship playground, flying fox and spinning chairs before we ventured down to the sand. I wont lie, from the beach to the park was a steep walk. There are steps (beautiful colorful steps) but because we had the beach trolley we took the ramp next to the surf club. Going down was not an issue but coming back up with a baby in my arms and a trolley packed to the brim was challenging considering my fitness has been less then great lately. I want to clarify the kids did not struggle with it at all.... just me because I was the pack horse. The way around this is to drive your 4wd along the beach and park right in front of the water, which we would have done if it was not for the sold out permits (due to covid restrictions). Nevertheless we set up our umbrella and the kids had a blast running into the shallows and building sand castles. The beach itself was beautiful, clean and had lots of stunning rock formations to climb and look at. The kids really enjoyed it and even carrying a baby, I found the walk to the rocks easy enough. There are some spectacular views from the beach as well. After some sun and sand we headed up to the road again to the shops. We bought some souvenirs, visited the op shop and headed into the burger place for some lunch. The food was moderately priced, and delicious. They went out of their way to cater to our dairy/soy intolerant daughter so that is an automatic tick of approval from me as a mother. Eating out with her can be a nightmare. So anyone who can make that easier is a saint. Everything is a short walk so easy for toddlers and younger kids, plus it is pram friendly for babies. By this point it was mid afternoon so we headed home where all 3 kids had a lovely snooze! The drive through the countryside is pristine and relaxing so as long as your kids travel well it doesn't feel too long. Not everyone is keen on a 2-3 hour road trip for just one day but for us it was a fantastic day out. Next time we will be camping for a night or two! I will write a new blog on that so stay tuned!
